Advent Sunday
Time, Interrupted
Who if us doesn’t believe we can do more if we can just go faster?
Google Maps tends to always sends me on the fastest, non-scenic routes because it believes I am not into the journey–only the time I can save.
But Starbucks has another take. Although their machines can make a lot of coffees, they’ve discovered customers want a handmade, ‘barista’ experience, so have slowed down their service to just two cups at a time. So, who knows me best?
This has made me ponder on Romans 8 where I read, ‘Creation waits in eager anticipation…For in this hope we were saved.’.
Now, this sounds a lot like Advent to me as it reminds me of the joy of waiting. It gives me space to anticipate the hope of the world–Jesus.
Now I’ve got to be honest, patience doesn’t always feel like a virtue, let alone a fruit of the Holy Spirit. It’s why I can get frustrated with slow answers to my quickly said prayers. Maybe you too.
But I am learning patience is best understood when I intentionally slow life down and take in the moment. It’s where I can enjoy the journey most because it is in these unhurried times I will catch more than a glimpse of God’s goodness and his love for me.
It is where I find my assurance and realise speed is not my greatest need but space. It means too, I will always make it home in good time.
